Two hammocks

Day 51

Seen on my walk today: turtle. Snapping turtle.

This weekend, the first one of May, finally felt like spring. Two days in a row of warm weather. We spent most of both days outside. Laundry on the line. Backyard games. I went for a walk: Caught up with a friend on Saturday; listened to an audiobook today.

Today we rigged up two of our camping hammocks in the backyard. We’ve talked about doing so for a few years. We have limited trees. Though our backyard is tree lined, most of the trees are on our neighbors’ properties. But we have a corner of the yard, And, with the help of one one of those trees just over our fence line, and with extended ropes, we were successful. The kids spent hours today in those hammocks. And after my walk, I spent an hour reading and swaying and looking up at the blue sky through the tall pines.

It felt like a real weekend. Tomorrow is Monday. Back to work and school. Though, of course, without leaving the house.

Today I stayed away from headlines for the most part. But I did see that a church in Worcester held an in-person service, and later the church was fined $300 for that gathering, which went against the governor’s stay-at-home order. Also, Georgia opened up the state this week, and immediately there was a surge of — my son told me — 1,000 cases. More than 3,700 Massachusetts deaths. More than 67,000 in the U.S. There was a pro-Trump, pro-open-up-the country rally on Saturday in our town.

The news yesterday felt dire. I read a headline about the possibility that a vaccine may never be found. And an article that cited the need to be prepared to be doing some form of social distancing for 36 months. Some days the headlines offer hope, but yesterday I found little to no hope. And today, I didn’t look.

It was a nice day. That is enough.

Stay safe, everyone.
